Port Protection, Alaska is a small community located on the southeastern coast of Alaska’s Prince of Wales Island. It is the only town in the Port Protection Census Area, which has a total population of just over 1,000 people. The town has a long history, dating back to the early days of the Alaska gold rush, and it has evolved over time to become the unique place it is today.

The first recorded Europeans to visit the area were Russian explorers in 1741. They named the island “Ostrov Kresta,” or “Cross Island,” because of the cross-shaped mountain that is now known as Mount Edgecumbe. The Russians had little interest in the area beyond its potential as a safe harbor for their ships, and it was not until the early 1800s that any permanent settlements were established.

American and British explorers began visiting the area more frequently in the early 1800s, and the first permanent American settlement was established in 1867. This settlement, known as “Port Protection,” was located on the southern tip of the island and was primarily a fishing and trading outpost.

The population of Port Protection grew slowly but steadily over the next few decades, as more and more people came to the area in search of work in the fishing and logging industries. The town also became a popular stop for prospectors during the Alaska gold rush of the late 1800s.

The early 1900s were a time of change for Port Protection. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1906, and many of the residents who had been working in the fishing and logging industries left to find work elsewhere. The population of the town dropped sharply, and it was not until the 1950s that it began to rebound.

The 1950s also saw the establishment of the Port Protection School, which served students in grades kindergarten through 12. The school was an important part of the community, and it helped to attract new families to the area.

The town of Port Protection has continued to evolve over the past few decades. The population has remained relatively stable, and the town has become a popular destination for tourists and recreationists. The school has been expanded and now serves students in grades K-8.
